Community Garden
The Community Garden was established in 2012 by members of the Mountain Community Co-op who wanted to give back to the community. The Garden is part of the Co-op's community outreach program. The Garden was built with assistance from a number of community members such as National Day of Service volunteers and Eagle Scouts who organized the work party to clear much of the land for the original site, constructed most of the raised beds, disassembled, moved and reassembled the raised beds and other garden structures to the new site. Funding to create the community garden was provided by a compost demonstration grant from Pierce County, a $500 loan from the Mountain Community Co-op, our parent organization, a grant from the Nisqually Tribe to support and demonstrate water conservation at the garden as an example of what residents can do in their own gardens, Sharon Ballard Community Garden Grants in 2017 and 2019 to help with our moving costs and to complete set up of a donated greenhouse, and again in 2021 to replace our deer fencing. We are grateful to the Van Eaton family for providing the space for us to operate the Community Garden; to Kristen McIvor, the Tacoma/Pierce County Garden Coordinator and current Director for Harvest Pierce County, for assisting us in getting organized; and the National Day of Service and all of the community volunteers who provided for significant improvements to the garden.
The Mountain Community Garden is open to all community members in the surrounding area. We are an all organic garden. We encourage healthy environmentally sustainable practices that provide encouragement of and education on organic growing techniques for our local conditions. All members are required to help maintain the common garden spaces and food bank plots. We support our local Eatonville Family Agency food bank by growing organic produce in the garden and ask that each member contribute to growing for the food bank as well
We provide educational opportunities to practice environmentally sustainable methods for growing healthy local food, reducing solid waste through composting, and other related topics.
The Garden is open to all who would like to grow organic food, herbs, or flowers. Participation in caring for the community garden is shared among the users and is a requirement to participate.
Experienced and friendly gardeners (including a few Master Gardeners) are available to help you grow your perfect garden. If you are a seasoned gardener who needs a bit more growing room or someone who wants to grow food for our local food bank - come grow with us.
